Calamine lotion

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Calamine Lotion is a topical medication often used to relieve itching, pain, and discomfort from skin irritations such as sunburn, insect bites, or poison ivy. It is a combination of zinc oxide and ferric oxide and is pink in color.

Composition[edit | edit source]

Calamine lotion is composed of two main ingredients: zinc oxide and ferric oxide. Zinc oxide has astringent properties, which means it can cause the skin to tighten or constrict. Ferric oxide, also known as iron(III) oxide, gives the lotion its distinctive pink color.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Calamine lotion is primarily used to soothe and relieve itching and discomfort from minor skin conditions. This includes sunburn, insect bites, poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. It can also be used to treat other types of minor skin irritations and rashes.

Application[edit | edit source]

To use calamine lotion, shake the bottle well before each use. Apply the lotion to the affected area of skin, usually one to four times daily or as directed by a doctor. The lotion should not be applied to the eyes or inside the mouth, nose, or genitals.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

While side effects from calamine lotion are rare, they can occur. These may include skin irritation, redness, or rash. If these side effects occur, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before using calamine lotion, individuals should tell their doctor or pharmacist if they are allergic to any of its ingredients. It should not be used on open wounds or infected areas of skin. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a healthcare professional before using calamine lotion.
