Cam sành

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Cam sành is a type of citrus fruit that is native to Vietnam. It is known for its bright green skin and sweet, tangy flavor. The fruit is commonly used in Vietnamese cuisine, both as a food and as a flavoring for beverages and desserts.

Description[edit | edit source]

The cam sành is a medium-sized citrus fruit, typically measuring between 6 and 8 centimeters in diameter. The skin of the fruit is bright green, even when fully ripe, and is relatively thick compared to other citrus fruits. The flesh of the fruit is a pale yellow color and is divided into segments, similar to an orange or a grapefruit. The fruit has a sweet, tangy flavor and a juicy texture.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Cam sành trees are evergreen and can grow up to 6 meters in height. They prefer a tropical climate and are most commonly grown in the southern regions of Vietnam. The trees produce fruit year-round, but the peak season for cam sành is in the winter months.

The trees are propagated through grafting, a process in which a branch from a mature cam sành tree is attached to the trunk of a young tree. This method ensures that the new tree will produce fruit that is identical to the parent tree.

Uses[edit | edit source]

In Vietnamese cuisine, cam sành is used in a variety of dishes. The fruit is often eaten fresh, but it can also be used to flavor beverages, desserts, and sauces. The juice of the cam sành is particularly popular and is often used to make a refreshing summer drink.

In addition to its culinary uses, cam sành is also used in traditional Vietnamese medicine. The fruit is believed to have a cooling effect on the body and is often used to treat fevers and other heat-related illnesses.
