Canton, Massachusetts is a town in Norfolk County, in the United States. It was first settled in 1630 and officially incorporated in 1797. Canton is part of the Greater Boston area, located approximately 15 miles south of downtown Boston.

Canton was historically a part of Stoughton. The area was first settled in 1630, and later incorporated as a separate town in 1797. The town was named after the city of Canton, China, as a tribute to the town's early role in the China Trade.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Canton is located in eastern Massachusetts, bordered by Norwood to the north, Sharon to the south, Stoughton and Randolph to the west, and Milton and Quincy to the east. The town is known for its hilly terrain and numerous bodies of water, including the Neponset River and Reservoir Pond.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Canton is home to several notable businesses and organizations, including the Dunkin' Donuts world headquarters, Reebok international headquarters, and the Massachusetts Audubon Society's Visual Arts Center. The town also has a thriving local business community, with a variety of shops, restaurants, and services.

Canton's public school system includes the Canton High School, the William H. Galvin Middle School, and three elementary schools. The town is also home to the private, Catholic, college-preparatory school, Xaverian Brothers High School.

Canton is served by two MBTA Commuter Rail stations, providing direct access to Boston. The town is also located near several major highways, including Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 1.

Several notable individuals have hailed from Canton, including Paul Revere, who built the nation's first copper rolling mill in the town, and Ezra T. Benson, a prominent leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
