Carignane
Carignane[edit | edit source]
Carignane (also known as Carignan) is a red wine grape variety that is widely planted in the Mediterranean region, particularly in France, Spain, and Italy. It is known for its high yields and is often used in blending to add color and acidity to wines.
History[edit | edit source]
Carignane is believed to have originated in the region of Aragon in Spain, where it is known as Cari ena. The grape spread to the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, where it became one of the most widely planted varieties. It was also introduced to Italy, where it is known as Carignano.
Viticulture[edit | edit source]
Carignane is a late-ripening variety that thrives in warm climates. It is known for its vigorous growth and high yields, which can sometimes lead to wines that are lacking in concentration if not carefully managed. The grape is susceptible to powdery mildew and other vine diseases, which requires careful vineyard management.
Wine Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Wines made from Carignane are typically high in acidity and tannins, with flavors of red fruits such as raspberry and cranberry. The grape is often used in blends, particularly with Grenache, Syrah, and Mourv dre, to create balanced and complex wines. In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in producing single-varietal Carignane wines, which can exhibit a rustic charm and earthy notes.
Regions[edit | edit source]
France[edit | edit source]
In France, Carignane is primarily grown in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, where it is often blended with other varieties to produce C tes du Rh ne and Corbi res wines. The grape was once the most widely planted in France, but its popularity has declined in favor of other varieties.
Spain[edit | edit source]
In Spain, Carignane is known as Cari ena and is grown in the Catalonia and Aragon regions. It is often blended with Tempranillo and Garnacha to produce wines with depth and complexity.
Italy[edit | edit source]
In Italy, Carignane is known as Carignano and is primarily grown on the island of Sardinia. The Carignano del Sulcis is a notable wine region where the grape is used to produce robust and flavorful wines.
