Catoctin AVA[edit | edit source]

The Catoctin AVA (American Viticultural Area) is a designated wine grape-growing region located in the state of Maryland, United States. It is situated in the northern part of the state, primarily within Frederick County. The AVA was established by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) on February 11, 2010.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The Catoctin AVA covers an area of approximately 92 square miles (238 square kilometers). It is named after the Catoctin Mountain range, which runs through the region. The AVA is characterized by its hilly terrain, with elevations ranging from 400 to 1,800 feet (122 to 549 meters) above sea level. The Catoctin Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River, flows through the AVA, providing a source of water for irrigation.

Climate[edit | edit source]

The climate of the Catoctin AVA is classified as humid continental, with hot summers and cold winters. The region experiences a wide diurnal temperature variation, with warm days and cool nights during the growing season. This diurnal shift helps to preserve the acidity and flavor development in the grapes. The average annual rainfall in the AVA is around 40 inches (1,016 millimeters), which is beneficial for grape cultivation.

Grape Varieties[edit | edit source]

The Catoctin AVA is known for its production of both red and white grape varieties. Some of the popular red grape varieties grown in the region include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah. Chardonnay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling are among the white grape varieties cultivated in the AVA. The diverse soil types, including shale, limestone, and granite, contribute to the unique characteristics of the wines produced in the Catoctin AVA.

Wineries[edit | edit source]

The Catoctin AVA is home to several wineries that produce a wide range of wines. Some of the notable wineries in the region include:

  • Catoctin Breeze Vineyard: Known for its award-winning red and white wines, Catoctin Breeze Vineyard offers a picturesque setting for wine tasting and events.
  • Elk Run Vineyards: Established in 1983, Elk Run Vineyards is one of the oldest wineries in the Catoctin AVA. It specializes in producing Bordeaux-style wines and has received numerous accolades for its craftsmanship.
  • Linganore Winecellars: Located on the eastern slope of the Catoctin Mountains, Linganore Winecellars is a family-owned winery that offers a diverse selection of wines, including both traditional and fruit wines.

Tourism[edit | edit source]

The Catoctin AVA attracts wine enthusiasts and tourists who are interested in exploring the region's wineries and vineyards. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings, vineyard tours, and events hosted by the wineries. The scenic beauty of the Catoctin Mountains and the surrounding countryside also make it an ideal destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, picnicking, and birdwatching.
