Family: | Callitrichidae |
Cebuella is a genus of New World monkeys in the family Callitrichidae, commonly referred to as the pygmy marmosets. This genus is notable for containing some of the smallest primates in the world, with the species Cebuella pygmaea, also known as the pygmy marmoset, being the most well-known member.
Description[edit | edit source]
Members of the genus Cebuella are extremely small, with adult body weights typically under 100 grams. They have dense fur, which is generally a mixture of grey and brown colors, helping them blend into the tree bark they live on. Their tails are longer than their bodies, which aids in balance as they navigate through dense foliage.
Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]
Cebuella species are found in the western Amazon Basin in South America. They inhabit dense tropical rainforests, where they live in the upper canopy. Their distribution includes parts of Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador.
Behavior[edit | edit source]
Pygmy marmosets are arboreal and diurnal. They live in small groups, typically consisting of an adult pair and their offspring. These primates are territorial and communicate with a variety of vocalizations, body postures, and facial expressions.
Diet[edit | edit source]
The diet of Cebuella primarily consists of tree gum. They are specialized to feed on gum, using their sharp teeth to gnaw holes in tree bark to access the sap. In addition to gum, they also consume insects and other small arthropods.
Reproduction[edit | edit source]
Reproduction in Cebuella involves a gestation period of about 4.5 months, after which usually twins are born. The entire group helps in the care of the young, with the male often taking a significant role in carrying the infants until they are old enough to be more independent.
Conservation[edit | edit source]
While currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List, the species in the genus Cebuella face threats from habitat destruction and the illegal pet trade. Conservation efforts are necessary to ensure their survival in the wild.
