Central Italy
Central Italy (Italian: Italia Centrale or just Centro) is one of the five official statistical regions of Italy used by the National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT), a first level NUTS region and a European Parliament constituency. Central Italy encompasses the regions of Lazio, Marche, Tuscany, and Umbria.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Central Italy is located in the middle of the Italian peninsula, between the Apennine Mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea. The region is characterized by a mix of coastal areas, hilly zones, and mountainous regions. The Apennine Mountains, which run down the center of Italy, dominate the region's landscape.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of Central Italy is deeply intertwined with the history of Italy as a whole. The region was home to the Etruscan civilization, one of the most advanced in pre-Roman Europe. During the Roman Empire, Central Italy was the heart of the empire, with the city of Rome serving as its capital.

The region is home to numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the historic centers of Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, and Pienza, as well as the entire Val d'Orcia.
