Centre for Genomic Pathogen Surveillance

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Centre for Genomic Pathogen Surveillance (CGPS) is a global network of scientists and health practitioners dedicated to the genomic surveillance of pathogens. The organization's primary goal is to provide data and tools that can be used to monitor the spread of infectious diseases and the emergence of new ones.

History[edit | edit source]

The CGPS was established in 2015 as a collaboration between the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the Big Data Institute at the University of Oxford. The organization was created in response to the growing need for a coordinated global effort to track and understand the spread of infectious diseases.

Mission and Work[edit | edit source]

The CGPS's mission is to provide the global health community with the data and tools necessary to track and understand the spread of infectious diseases. The organization achieves this by developing and providing access to a suite of bioinformatics tools and databases that can be used to analyze and interpret genomic data.

The CGPS also conducts research to improve our understanding of pathogen genomics and to develop new methods for genomic surveillance. This research is often conducted in collaboration with other institutions and researchers around the world.

Tools and Databases[edit | edit source]

The CGPS provides a number of tools and databases for genomic surveillance. These include Pathogenwatch, a tool for the genomic surveillance of bacterial pathogens, and Microreact, a web application for the visualization and sharing of genomic epidemiology data.

Impact[edit | edit source]

The work of the CGPS has had a significant impact on our understanding of infectious diseases and our ability to respond to them. The organization's tools and databases have been used in numerous studies and have contributed to the tracking and understanding of diseases such as COVID-19, tuberculosis, and malaria.
