Certified Sustainable Palm Oil

Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO) is palm oil that has been produced according to the standards set by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The RSPO is a non-profit organization that unites stakeholders from seven sectors of the palm oil industry: oil palm producers, processors or traders, consumer goods manufacturers, retailers, banks/investors, and environmental and social non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to develop and implement global standards for sustainable palm oil.

History

The RSPO was established in 2004 in response to the growing concerns about the environmental and social impacts of palm oil production. The first version of the RSPO Principles and Criteria (P&C) for sustainable palm oil production was adopted in 2007. These criteria cover a range of issues, including biodiversity conservation, fair labor practices, and community engagement.

The RSPO Principles and Criteria for the production of sustainable palm oil include:

The certification process for CSPO involves several steps: 1. Pre-assessment: A preliminary evaluation to identify any major gaps in compliance with the RSPO standards. 2. Main Assessment: A comprehensive audit conducted by an RSPO-accredited certification body. 3. Certification Decision: Based on the audit findings, the certification body decides whether to grant CSPO status. 4. Surveillance Audits: Regular audits to ensure ongoing compliance with the RSPO standards.
