Cervical spinal nerve 8
Cervical spinal nerve 8
The Cervical spinal nerve 8 (C8) is a spinal nerve of the cervical segment. It originates from the spinal cord between the seventh and eighth cervical vertebrae (C7 and C8).
Structure[edit | edit source]
The C8 nerve is the eighth and the last of the cervical spinal nerves. It emerges from the spinal cord below the C7 vertebra and above the first thoracic vertebra (T1). The C8 nerve, like other spinal nerves, is a mixed nerve, carrying both sensory and motor information.
Function[edit | edit source]
The C8 nerve supplies sensation to the lower part of the neck and the upper part of the shoulder. It also provides motor control to various muscles of the forearm and hand, including the small muscles that control fine finger movements.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Damage to the C8 nerve can result in a variety of symptoms, including numbness, tingling, or weakness in the hand and fingers. Conditions such as cervical radiculopathy and thoracic outlet syndrome can affect the C8 nerve.
