Châtenay-Malabry

Châtenay-Malabry is a commune located in the southwestern suburbs of Paris, France. It is 10.8 km (6.7 mi) from the center of Paris. The commune is known for its historical sites, parks, and its role in medical research.

Châtenay-Malabry was originally known as simply Châtenay. The name Châtenay is derived from Latin castanetum, meaning "chestnut grove." The addition of Malabry comes from a domain and hamlet located in the commune, originally Mallabri, then Mallabry, and finally Malabry. The name Malabry is derived from Medieval Latin Mallabriacus, meaning "estate of Mallabrius."

Geography[edit | edit source]

Châtenay-Malabry is located in the Hauts-de-Seine department of the Île-de-France region. It is bordered by the communes of Sceaux, Le Plessis-Robinson, Antony, and Bourg-la-Reine. The commune is divided into two by the valley of the Ruisseau de la Vallée-aux-Loups, with the north side being more urbanized and the south side preserving a more rural character.

Medical Research[edit | edit source]

Châtenay-Malabry is home to several important medical research institutions. The most notable of these is the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale, or INSERM), which is one of the leading medical research institutions in Europe. INSERM conducts research in a wide range of medical fields, including genetics, neuroscience, and cancer research.

Châtenay-Malabry is known for its historical sites and parks. The Arboretum de la Vallée-aux-Loups is a notable arboretum and garden located in the commune. The Maison de Chateaubriand, the former home of French writer François-René de Chateaubriand, is also located in Châtenay-Malabry and is now a museum dedicated to his life and work.
