Chariton, IA

  • Chariton is a city in and the county seat of Lucas County, Iowa, United States. It is the largest town in the county, with a population of approximately 4,321 as of the 2010 census. The city is located in the south-central part of the state, approximately 60 miles southeast of Des Moines.

  • Chariton was platted in 1850 and was officially incorporated as a city in 1866. The city was named after the Chariton River, which in turn was named after a French trader named Joseph Chariton.

  • Chariton is located at 41°1′21″N 93°18′27″W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.82 square miles, all of it land.
