Charles N. Serhan
Charles N. Serhan is an American biochemist and a pioneer in the field of lipid mediators and resolution physiology. He is currently the Simon Gelman Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School and a Professor of Oral Medicine, Infection, and Immunity at Harvard School of Dental Medicine.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Charles N. Serhan was born in the United States. He completed his undergraduate studies in biochemistry at Stony Brook University, New York. He then pursued his Ph.D. in experimental pathology and medical sciences from New York University School of Medicine.
Career[edit | edit source]
After completing his Ph.D., Serhan joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School where he currently holds the Simon Gelman Professorship of Anaesthesia. He also serves as a Professor of Oral Medicine, Infection, and Immunity at Harvard School of Dental Medicine.
Research[edit | edit source]
Serhan's research primarily focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of inflammation and its resolution. He is known for his pioneering work in the identification and structural elucidation of lipid mediators and their role in resolution physiology. His research has led to the discovery of a new genus of lipid mediators, termed resolvins, which are critical in controlling the resolution of acute inflammation.
Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]
Serhan's contributions to the field of lipid mediators and resolution physiology have earned him numerous awards and honors. These include the William Harvey Outstanding Scientist Medal, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) Merck Award, and the American Association of Immunologists (AAI) Excellence in Mentoring Award.
Publications[edit | edit source]
Serhan has authored and co-authored numerous scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. His work has been published in prestigious journals such as Nature, Science, and The Journal of Experimental Medicine.
