Cheiloplasty

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Cheiloplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the appearance of the lips, either by enhancing their size or shape, or by correcting any deformities. It can be performed on either the upper or lower lip, or both, and can be either a cosmetic procedure or a reconstructive one, depending on the patient's needs and desires.

Types of Cheiloplasty[edit | edit source]

There are two main types of cheiloplasty: augmentation cheiloplasty and reduction cheiloplasty.

Augmentation Cheiloplasty[edit | edit source]

Augmentation cheiloplasty is a procedure that aims to increase the size of the lips. This can be achieved through the use of injectable fillers, fat grafting, or surgical implants. The goal is to create fuller, more voluptuous lips.

Reduction Cheiloplasty[edit | edit source]

Reduction cheiloplasty, on the other hand, is a procedure that aims to reduce the size of the lips. This is typically done by removing a portion of the lip tissue, either from the inside of the mouth or through an incision on the outer edge of the lips.

Procedure[edit | edit source]

The specific procedure for a cheiloplasty will depend on the type of cheiloplasty being performed, as well as the individual patient's needs and desires. However, in general, the procedure involves making an incision in the lip, manipulating the lip tissue to achieve the desired result, and then closing the incision with sutures.

Recovery[edit | edit source]

Recovery from a cheiloplasty procedure can vary greatly depending on the specific procedure performed and the individual patient. However, in general, patients can expect some swelling and discomfort in the days following the procedure, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication and cold compresses. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within a week or two.

Risks and Complications[edit | edit source]

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with cheiloplasty. These can include infection, bleeding, scarring, and adverse reactions to anesthesia. In addition, there is always the risk that the patient may not be satisfied with the results of the procedure.
