Cher (born Cherilyn Sarkisian; May 20, 1946) is an American singer, actress, and television personality. Often referred to by the media as the "Goddess of Pop", she has been described as embodying female autonomy in a male-dominated industry. Cher is known for her distinctive contralto singing voice and for having worked in numerous areas of entertainment, as well as adopting a variety of styles and appearances throughout her six-decade-long career.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Cher was born on May 20, 1946, in El Centro, California, to John Sarkisian, an Armenian-American truck driver, and Georgia Holt (born Jackie Jean Crouch), a model and actress. She has a half-sister, Georganne LaPiere. Cher's parents divorced when she was ten months old, and she was raised primarily by her mother.

Career[edit | edit source]

1960s: Sonny & Cher[edit | edit source]

Cher first achieved fame in 1965 as one-half of the folk rock husband-wife duo Sonny & Cher after their song "I Got You Babe" reached number one on the American and British charts. By the end of 1967, they had sold 40 million records worldwide and had become, according to Time magazine, rock's "it" couple.

1970s: Solo Career and Television[edit | edit source]

Cher began her solo career simultaneously with her work in Sonny & Cher, releasing her first million-seller song, "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)", in 1966. She became a television personality in the 1970s with her shows The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and Cher. She emerged as a fashion trendsetter by wearing elaborate outfits on her television shows.

1980s: Film Career[edit | edit source]

Cher's film career began in the early 1980s with roles in films such as Silkwood (1983), for which she received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, and Mask (1985). She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Moonstruck (1987).

1990s: Music Comeback[edit | edit source]

In 1998, Cher released the album Believe, which featured the use of Auto-Tune, also known as the "Cher effect". The title track became one of the best-selling singles of all time, with over 10 million copies sold worldwide.

2000s–Present[edit | edit source]

Cher continued to tour and release music into the 2000s and 2010s. She has also appeared in films such as Burlesque (2010) and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018). In 2018, she released an album of ABBA covers titled Dancing Queen.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Cher has been married twice, first to Sonny Bono from 1964 to 1975, and then to Gregg Allman from 1975 to 1979. She has two children, Chaz Bono and Elijah Blue Allman.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Cher has been honored with numerous awards, including a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, an Academy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and a Cannes Film Festival Award. She is the only artist to have a number-one single on a Billboard chart in each of the past six decades.
