Singer

Singer is a person who uses their voice to produce musical sounds with tone and rhythm. Singers may perform alone or accompanied by anything from a single instrument (as in art song or some jazz styles) up to a symphony orchestra or big band. Different singing styles include art music such as opera and Chinese opera, Indian music and religious music styles such as gospel, traditional music styles, world music, jazz, blues, ghazal and popular music styles such as pop, rock, electronic dance music and filmi (Indian film songs).

Types of singers[edit | edit source]

There are several types of singers, including professional singers who earn their income from music, and amateur singers who sing for pleasure and may not earn income from it. There are also session singers, who are hired by recording studios to provide backing vocals for other artists.

Vocal techniques[edit | edit source]

Singers use various techniques such as breathing and posture, vocal range, vocal register, vocal timbre, vibrato, and extended vocal technique such as the scream, the growl, and the death growl.

Health issues[edit | edit source]

Singers may have to deal with health issues related to their profession, such as vocal fold nodules, laryngitis, vocal cord paralysis, and the effects of smoking on the voice.
