Chicken Licken (restaurant)
Chicken Licken is a fast food restaurant chain that originated in South Africa. The chain was founded by George Sombonos in 1981. Chicken Licken is known for its fried chicken products and is the second-largest fast food chain in South Africa.
History[edit | edit source]
Chicken Licken was established by George Sombonos, son of a Greek immigrant. Sombonos' father owned a restaurant in the Johannesburg suburb of Ridgeway, where Sombonos learned the restaurant business. After his father's death, Sombonos took over the restaurant and began experimenting with fried chicken recipes, eventually developing the recipe that would become Chicken Licken's signature dish.
Menu[edit | edit source]
Chicken Licken's menu primarily consists of fried chicken products, including chicken pieces, chicken burgers, and chicken wings. The chain also offers a variety of side dishes, such as french fries, coleslaw, and mashed potatoes. Chicken Licken is particularly known for its "Hotwings", which are spicy chicken wings.
Expansion[edit | edit source]
Since its establishment, Chicken Licken has expanded significantly within South Africa and has also begun to establish a presence in other countries. As of 2020, the chain has over 300 locations in South Africa and has also opened locations in Botswana and Zimbabwe.
Controversies[edit | edit source]
Chicken Licken has faced several controversies, particularly related to its advertising. The chain's advertisements have been criticized for their use of stereotypes and for being culturally insensitive. In 2018, one of Chicken Licken's advertisements was banned by the Advertising Regulatory Board of South Africa for being offensive.
