China Medical Board
China Medical Board[edit | edit source]
The China Medical Board (CMB) is a private, non-profit organization that aims to advance health in China and neighboring Asian countries by strengthening medical, nursing, and public health research and education. The CMB was established in 1914 as the second major program of the Rockefeller Foundation, and became an independent foundation in 1928.
History[edit | edit source]
The China Medical Board was founded by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1914 with an initial endowment of $12 million. The CMB's first project was the establishment of the Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) in Beijing, which aimed to bring Western medical education and research standards to China.
In 1928, the CMB became an independent foundation, and its endowment was increased to $19 million. Since then, the CMB has expanded its work to other Asian countries and has supported a wide range of initiatives in medical education, research, and public health.
Mission and Work[edit | edit source]
The CMB's mission is to advance health in China and Asia by strengthening capacity for medical, nursing, and public health education and research. The CMB supports initiatives that build institutional capacity, promote innovation and policy relevance, and foster the next generation of health leaders.
The CMB's work is organized into three main areas:
- Medical Education: The CMB supports the development of innovative medical education programs, with a focus on competency-based education, interprofessional education, and the integration of medical education with health care delivery systems.
- Health Policy and Systems Science: The CMB promotes research and policy dialogue on health system reform, with a focus on primary health care, health financing, and health governance.
- Global Health: The CMB supports research and education programs that address global health challenges, with a focus on infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and health security.
Partnerships[edit | edit source]
The CMB works in partnership with universities, research institutions, and other organizations in China and Asia. Key partners include the Peking Union Medical College, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Ministry of Health.
