New Zealand biochemist

Christine Winterbourn

Christine Coe Winterbourn is a prominent New Zealand biochemist known for her pioneering research in the field of free radical biology. Her work has significantly advanced the understanding of oxidative stress and its implications in human health and disease.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Christine Winterbourn was born in New Zealand. She developed an early interest in science, which led her to pursue a career in biochemistry. Winterbourn completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Auckland, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree. She then went on to obtain her PhD in biochemistry from the same institution, focusing on the study of oxidative processes in biological systems.

Career[edit | edit source]

Winterbourn began her career as a researcher at the University of Otago, where she worked on the mechanisms of oxidative damage in cells. Her research has been instrumental in elucidating the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cellular processes and their contribution to various diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular disorders.

In 1979, Winterbourn joined the University of Canterbury as a faculty member in the Department of Pathology. She has held various academic positions, including Professor of Pathology, and has been a key figure in the development of the university's research programs in biochemistry and molecular biology.

Research Contributions[edit | edit source]

Winterbourn's research has focused on the chemistry of free radicals and their biological effects. She has made significant contributions to understanding how cells produce and regulate ROS, and how these molecules can cause damage to cellular components such as DNA, proteins, and lipids.

One of her notable achievements is the development of methods to measure oxidative stress in biological systems. Her work has provided insights into the mechanisms by which oxidative stress contributes to the pathogenesis of diseases and has paved the way for the development of antioxidant therapies.

Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]

Christine Winterbourn has received numerous awards for her contributions to science. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in recognition of her outstanding research achievements. In 2011, she was awarded the Marsden Medal for her lifetime of distinguished service to science.

In 2017, Winterbourn was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to science. Her work continues to inspire new generations of scientists in the field of biochemistry and free radical research.
