Citysuper was founded in 1996 in Hong Kong by the Fung Group. The first store opened in the Times Square shopping mall in Causeway Bay. The concept was to create a "mega lifestyle specialty store" that offers a wide range of high-quality products from around the world.

Citysuper stores are designed to provide a unique shopping experience, combining a supermarket, a department store, and a food court. The stores are divided into several sections:
