Claude-François Achard (1751–1809) was a French physician, linguist, and lexicographer. He is best known for his contributions to the field of medicine and his work on the Provençal language.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Claude-François Achard was born on May 23, 1751, in Marseille, France. He pursued his medical studies at the University of Montpellier, where he earned his degree in medicine.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

Achard practiced medicine in Marseille, where he gained a reputation for his expertise and dedication to patient care. He was particularly interested in the study of epidemics and infectious diseases, which were prevalent in the region during his time.

Contributions to Linguistics[edit | edit source]

In addition to his medical career, Achard was a passionate linguist. He is renowned for his work on the Provençal language, a variety of the Occitan language spoken in the Provence region of France. Achard compiled a comprehensive dictionary of the Provençal language, which was one of the first of its kind. His dictionary, titled "Dictionnaire de la Provence," was published in 1785 and remains a valuable resource for scholars of the Occitan language.
