The Cleveland Browns are a professional American football team based in Cleveland, Ohio. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division. The team was founded in 1946 and was named after its first coach, Paul Brown. The Browns play their home games at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
History[edit | edit source]
The Cleveland Browns were established in 1946 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). The team was named after its first coach, Paul Brown, who was a pioneering figure in professional football. The Browns dominated the AAFC, winning all four championships before the league dissolved in 1949. The team then joined the NFL in 1950.
In their first NFL season, the Browns won the NFL Championship Game, defeating the Los Angeles Rams. The team continued to be successful throughout the 1950s and 1960s, winning a total of eight league championships before the Super Bowl era.
Stadium[edit | edit source]
The Browns play their home games at Cleveland Browns Stadium, which opened in 1999. The stadium is located on the shores of Lake Erie and has a seating capacity of approximately 67,000. It replaced the old Cleveland Stadium, which was the team's home from 1946 to 1995.
Rivalries[edit | edit source]
The Browns have several notable rivalries, including with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cincinnati Bengals, and Baltimore Ravens. The rivalry with the Steelers is one of the oldest and most storied in the NFL, dating back to 1950. The rivalry with the Bengals is known as the Battle of Ohio, while the rivalry with the Ravens is particularly intense due to the controversial relocation of the original Browns franchise to Baltimore in 1996.
Mascots[edit | edit source]
The Browns have three official mascots: Chomps, a dog; Swagger, a live bullmastiff; and Brownie the Elf, a mythical elf figure. These mascots are popular among fans and are a staple at home games and community events.
Notable Players[edit | edit source]
Some of the most notable players in Browns history include:
- Jim Brown, considered one of the greatest running backs of all time.
- Otto Graham, a Hall of Fame quarterback who led the team to multiple championships.
- Lou Groza, a Hall of Fame kicker and offensive tackle.
- Ozzie Newsome, a Hall of Fame tight end.
Coaching Staff[edit | edit source]
The current head coach of the Browns is Kevin Stefanski, who was hired in 2020. Under his leadership, the team has shown significant improvement and made the playoffs in the 2020 season for the first time since 2002.
Ownership[edit | edit source]
The Browns are owned by Jimmy and Dee Haslam, who purchased the team in 2012. The Haslams have been committed to rebuilding the team and have invested heavily in both the roster and facilities.
