Coastlines are the areas where the land meets the ocean or sea. They form one of the most dynamic and complex environments on Earth, characterized by a wide range of geographical features and ecosystems. Coastlines are shaped by various geological and oceanographic processes, including erosion, sediment deposition, and the action of waves and currents. These processes can lead to the formation of various coastal landforms such as beaches, cliffs, dunes, and estuaries.

The formation of coastlines is primarily influenced by the geological structure of the area, the sea level changes, and the energy of the waves and currents. Tectonic activities can lead to the uplift or subsidence of the coast, while sea level changes can expose or submerge different parts of the coastline. The energy of the waves and currents, influenced by local and global weather patterns, plays a crucial role in shaping the coastline by eroding softer rock formations and depositing sediments in other areas.
