Ocean

The Ocean is a vast body of salt water that covers more than 70% of the Earth's surface. It is divided into five major oceans: the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean, which is the largest.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Oceans are characterized by their salinity, depth, and the unique marine life they support. They play a crucial role in the Earth's climate by absorbing heat from the sun and redistributing it around the globe via ocean currents.

Marine Life[edit | edit source]

The ocean is home to a diverse range of species, from microscopic plankton to the largest animal on Earth, the blue whale. Many species in the ocean are yet to be discovered. The ocean's coral reefs, which are among the most biodiverse habitats on Earth, are home to a quarter of all marine species.

Human Interaction[edit | edit source]

Humans have interacted with the ocean since ancient times, using it for navigation, fishing, and more recently, for offshore drilling for oil and gas. However, human activities have also led to ocean pollution and overfishing, which are major threats to marine life and ocean health.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

Efforts to conserve the ocean are focused on reducing pollution, protecting marine life, and promoting sustainable fishing practices. Marine protected areas are one tool used to protect ocean habitats and biodiversity.
