The Coat of arms of Pennsylvania is an official emblem of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The coat of arms was adopted in 1778 and has been an important symbol of the state's heritage and identity.

Design[edit | edit source]

The coat of arms features a shield that is divided into three sections. The top section is blue, the middle section is black, and the bottom section is green. On the black fess, there are three silver discs, known as plates. The shield is supported by two black horses, which symbolize strength and loyalty.

Above the shield is a crest featuring an American Bald Eagle, representing the state's sovereignty and the United States. Below the shield is a banner with the state motto, "Virtue, Liberty, and Independence."

Symbolism[edit | edit source]

Each element of the coat of arms has specific meanings:

  • The American Bald Eagle represents the state's loyalty to the United States.
  • The shield's colors and design symbolize the state's rich natural resources and its commitment to justice and freedom.
  • The three plates on the black fess represent the state's commerce, transportation, and agriculture.
  • The two horses symbolize strength, courage, and loyalty.
  • The state motto, "Virtue, Liberty, and Independence," reflects the values and principles upon which the state was founded.

History[edit | edit source]

The coat of arms was adopted by the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 1778. It has undergone several modifications over the years, but the core elements have remained consistent. The design was influenced by the state's early settlers and their desire to create a symbol that would represent their new home and its values.

Usage[edit | edit source]

The coat of arms is used on various official documents, state flags, and government buildings. It is also featured on the Seal of Pennsylvania, which is used to authenticate official state documents.
