Coccidioides posadasii

From WikiMD's WELLNESSPEDIA

Coccidioides posadasii is a species of fungus that is known to cause a disease called coccidioidomycosis, also known as Valley Fever. This disease primarily affects the lungs and can be severe, especially in those with weakened immune systems.

Overview[edit]

Coccidioides posadasii is one of two species of Coccidioides, the other being Coccidioides immitis. Both species are nearly identical and cause the same disease. They are found in the soil of certain parts of the United States, Mexico, Central and South America.

Disease[edit]

When the spores of Coccidioides posadasii are inhaled, they can cause coccidioidomycosis. This disease can range from a mild, flu-like illness to severe pneumonia. In rare cases, the infection can spread from the lungs to other parts of the body, such as the skin, bones, joints, lymph nodes, and central nervous system.

Diagnosis and Treatment[edit]

Diagnosis of coccidioidomycosis is typically made through a combination of clinical symptoms, radiology, and laboratory tests. Treatment usually involves antifungal medications, and in severe cases, hospitalization may be required.

Prevention[edit]

Prevention strategies include avoiding activities that stir up dust in areas where Coccidioides is found, and wearing a mask in these areas.
