Coimbatore
Coimbatore is a major city in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is located on the banks of the Noyyal River and surrounded by the Western Ghats. Coimbatore is the second largest city in Tamil Nadu after Chennai and the 16th largest urban agglomeration in India. It is administered by the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation and is the administrative capital of Coimbatore district.

The region around Coimbatore was ruled by various indigenous tribes before falling under the control of the Cholas in the 2nd century CE. The city's name is believed to have been derived from Kovanputhur, after a leader named Kovan. Over the centuries, it was ruled by the Pandyas, the Hoysalas, the Madurai Sultanate, and the Vijayanagara Empire. In the 18th century, it came under the British Raj and became a prominent part of the Madras Presidency.
Economy[edit | edit source]
Coimbatore is known as the "Manchester of South India" due to its extensive textile industry, powered by the surrounding cotton fields. The city is also a major hub for the manufacture of automotive components, software services, education, and healthcare. It has a diverse industrial sector with over 25,000 small, medium, and large industries, including the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (CODISSIA) which is one of the largest in India. The city's economy is also supported by its IT and BPO sectors, with TIDEL Park Coimbatore being a significant landmark.

Coimbatore is situated at an elevation of about 411 meters above sea level. The city covers an area of 246.75 square kilometers. The Western Ghats mountain range to the west and the north provides a temperate climate and serves as a bio-diversity hotspot.

The climate in Coimbatore is generally mild, pleasant, and healthful. It benefits from the southwest monsoon rains but also receives significant precipitation from the northeast monsoon. Summers are warm, and winters are mild.

Coimbatore's culture is a blend of traditional and cosmopolitan elements. The city celebrates various festivals, including the Tamil New Year, Diwali, and Pongal. It is also known for its culinary scene, featuring both traditional Tamil cuisine and international dishes.

Tourist attractions in Coimbatore include the Marudamalai Temple, Perur Pateeswarar Temple, and the VOC Park and Zoo. The city serves as a gateway to several hill stations like Ooty and Valparai and natural attractions such as the Siruvani Waterfalls.
