Coital headache

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Coital headache is a rare type of headache that occurs during sexual activity, including masturbation or orgasm. These headaches are usually primary and benign, but can sometimes be secondary to other underlying conditions.

Classification[edit | edit source]

Coital headaches are classified into three types according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD). The first type is a dull ache in the head and neck that intensifies as sexual excitement increases. The second type is a sudden, severe, throbbing headache that occurs just before or during orgasm. The third type is a post-coital headache that occurs after orgasm and can last for hours or even days.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of coital headaches is unknown. However, they are thought to be due to a sudden increase in blood pressure that causes the blood vessels in the brain to dilate. Other factors that may contribute to coital headaches include certain medications, alcohol, and illicit drugs.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

The diagnosis of coital headache is made based on the patient's history and physical examination. In some cases, further tests such as a computed tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be needed to rule out other conditions.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for coital headaches depends on their frequency and severity. Mild cases may not require treatment. For more severe cases, medications such as beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, and triptans may be used. In rare cases, surgical intervention may be necessary.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for coital headaches is generally good. Most people experience only a few episodes, and the condition often resolves on its own. However, in some cases, coital headaches can be a sign of a more serious condition, such as a brain aneurysm or stroke, and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
