Colgate-Palmolive
Colgate-Palmolive Company is an American multinational consumer products company focused on the production, distribution, and provision of household, health care, and personal care products. The company is headquartered in New York City.
History[edit | edit source]
Colgate-Palmolive traces its origins to the early 19th century. The company was founded by William Colgate in 1806 as a starch, soap, and candle business in New York City. In 1873, the company introduced its first toothpaste, an aromatic toothpaste sold in jars. In 1896, Colgate introduced the first toothpaste in a tube, Colgate Ribbon Dental Cream.
In 1928, Colgate merged with the Palmolive-Peet Company, which was founded by B.J. Johnson in 1898. The Palmolive brand was so named because the soap was made of palm and olive oils. The combined company was named Colgate-Palmolive-Peet Company, but in 1953, the name was shortened to Colgate-Palmolive.
