Colgate-Palmolive is a global consumer goods company focused on the production, distribution, and provision of household, health care, and personal products. Founded in 1806 by William Colgate as a starch, soap, and candle business in New York City, the company has grown to become a household name in over 200 countries. Colgate-Palmolive's product range includes oral care products like toothpaste and toothbrushes, personal care products such as soaps, shampoos, and body washes, as well as pet nutrition products under the Hill's Pet Nutrition brand.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Colgate-Palmolive can be traced back to the early 19th century when William Colgate started a starch, soap, and candle business in New York City. The company initially operated under the name "William Colgate & Company". Following William Colgate's death in 1857, the company was reorganized as "Colgate & Company" under the management of his son, Samuel Colgate. The company expanded its product line and global reach throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

In 1928, Colgate merged with Palmolive-Peet Company, a soap manufacturer founded by B.J. Johnson in 1898, which had previously merged with the Peet Brothers in 1926. The merger created the Colgate-Palmolive-Peet Company, which was later simplified to Colgate-Palmolive Company in 1953. This merger combined Colgate's expertise in oral care products with Palmolive's strength in soap and detergents, setting the stage for the company's future growth in the personal and household care sectors.

It also engages in various philanthropic activities, including oral health education and disaster relief efforts.
