Collapsed lung

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Collapsed Lung or Pneumothorax is a medical condition characterized by the accumulation of air or gas in the pleural space, causing the lung to collapse. This condition can be spontaneous, traumatic, or iatrogenic and can lead to severe respiratory distress if not promptly treated.

Causes[edit | edit source]

A collapsed lung can occur due to a variety of reasons. The most common cause is a lung injury, which can result from a blunt or penetrating chest injury, certain medical procedures, or damage from underlying lung disease. Other causes include lung diseases such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, lung cancer, and emphysema. In some cases, a collapsed lung can occur without any obvious cause, known as a spontaneous pneumothorax.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The symptoms of a collapsed lung can vary depending on the cause and severity of the collapse. Common symptoms include sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, rapid heart rate, rapid breathing, and a feeling of tightness in the chest. In severe cases, symptoms may also include cyanosis (bluish color of the skin and lips due to lack of oxygen), decreased blood pressure, and extreme difficulty breathing.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of a collapsed lung typically involves a physical examination and imaging tests. During the physical examination, the doctor may listen to the patient's lungs to check for differences in breath sounds. Imaging tests such as a chest X-ray or CT scan can help confirm the diagnosis by showing the presence of air in the pleural space.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for a collapsed lung depends on the cause and severity of the condition. Small pneumothoraces may resolve on their own without treatment. However, larger pneumothoraces often require treatment to remove the air from the pleural space and allow the lung to re-expand. This can be done through a procedure known as a chest tube insertion or thoracentesis. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Prevention of a collapsed lung involves managing underlying lung diseases and avoiding activities that could lead to a lung injury. This includes not smoking, avoiding high altitudes, and using protective equipment during activities that could result in a chest injury.
