Coppertone

Coppertone is a brand of sunscreen products that was first introduced by Benjamin Green in 1944. The brand, which is owned by Beiersdorf, is known for its iconic logo featuring a young girl and a dog, which has become a symbol of summer and sun protection in the United States.

Benjamin Green, a pharmacist from Miami, developed the first Coppertone product in 1944. The product was initially a lotion designed to darken the skin, but Green later reformulated it to protect against the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. In 1953, Coppertone introduced the first sunscreen product, which had a SPF of 2.

The Coppertone logo, featuring a young girl in a swimsuit with a dog pulling down her bottoms to reveal a tan line, was first introduced in 1959. The logo has undergone several changes over the years, but the basic concept has remained the same.

Coppertone offers a wide range of sunscreen products, including lotions, sprays, and sticks. The brand also offers products specifically designed for children and babies, as well as products for sensitive skin and sport use.

Ownership[edit | edit source]

Coppertone was owned by Schering-Plough from 1975 until 2009, when it was acquired by Merck & Co.. In 2019, the brand was sold to Beiersdorf, a German personal care company that also owns the Nivea and Eucerin brands.
