Schering-Plough Corporation was a prominent American pharmaceutical company with deep-rooted historical significance in the pharmaceutical industry.

The origins of Schering-Plough trace back to the German company Schering AG, which was founded in 1851 by the pioneering chemist Ernst Christian Friedrich Schering. Initially serving as the U.S. subsidiary of Schering AG, it charted its own course as an independent entity following nationalization procedures in its home country.

In 1971, a significant merger took place between the Schering Corporation and Plough, a company established by the enterprising individual from Memphis, Abe Plough, in 1908. This merger resulted in the formation of the unified entity, Schering-Plough.

Merger with Merck & Co.[edit | edit source]

A landmark event in the history of Schering-Plough occurred on November 4, 2009, when it merged with the pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co.. Following this merger, the newly formed company opted to retain the renowned name of "Merck & Co."
