Johnnetta Cole

Johnnetta Betsch Cole (born October 19, 1936) is an American anthropologist, educator, museum director, and college president. Cole is known for her contributions to the field of education and for her work in civil rights activism.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Johnnetta Cole was born in Jacksonville, Florida. She attended Fisk University, a historically black university in Nashville, Tennessee, where she majored in sociology. She later transferred to Oberlin College in Ohio, where she completed her undergraduate degree. Cole went on to earn a master's degree and a Ph.D. in anthropology from Northwestern University.

Career[edit | edit source]

Cole has had a distinguished career in academia. She served as the president of both Spelman College and Bennett College, making history as the first African American woman to serve as president of Spelman College.

In addition to her work in academia, Cole has also made significant contributions to the museum world. She served as the director of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African Art from 2009 to 2017.

Throughout her career, Cole has been an active participant in the civil rights movement. She has worked with numerous organizations dedicated to promoting equality and justice, including the United Negro College Fund and the National Urban League.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Cole's work in education and civil rights has had a significant impact on both fields. She has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions, including the Ebony Magazine Lifetime Achievement Award and the American Anthropological Association's Franz Boas Award for Exemplary Service to Anthropology.
