Martek Biosciences Corporation is a biotechnology company that specializes in the development and commercialization of products derived from microalgae. The company was founded in 1985 and is headquartered in Columbia, Maryland, United States.

History[edit | edit source]

Martek Biosciences Corporation was established in 1985 by a group of scientists who had previously worked on the NASA's Closed Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) project. The company initially focused on the development of microbial products for use in animal nutrition and aquaculture. In the early 1990s, Martek shifted its focus to the development of nutritional products for human consumption, particularly those derived from microalgae.

Products[edit | edit source]

Martek's primary product is DHA omega-3, a fatty acid that is essential for brain and eye development. The company's DHA is derived from microalgae and is used in a variety of products, including infant formula, dietary supplements, and food and beverage products. Martek also produces ARA, another essential fatty acid that is important for infant development.

Acquisition[edit | edit source]

In 2011, Martek was acquired by Royal DSM, a global science-based company active in health, nutrition and materials, for approximately $1.1 billion. The acquisition allowed DSM to strengthen its position in the global nutritional ingredients market.

Research and Development[edit | edit source]

Martek invests heavily in research and development to identify new applications for its microalgae-derived products. The company's R&D efforts are focused on areas such as neurological health, cardiovascular health, and immune system support.
