Forest Laboratories
Forest Laboratories was an American pharmaceutical company that developed, manufactured, and sold both branded and generic forms of ethical drug products. The company was known for its focus on the development of central nervous system, cardiovascular, and respiratory drugs.
History[edit]
Forest Laboratories was founded in 1956 and was headquartered in New York City. Over the years, the company grew through a combination of internal development and strategic acquisitions. It became well-known for its successful marketing of antidepressants and other central nervous system drugs.
In 2014, Forest Laboratories was acquired by Actavis, a global pharmaceutical company, in a deal valued at approximately $25 billion. This acquisition was part of a trend of consolidation in the pharmaceutical industry, allowing Actavis to expand its product portfolio and global reach.
Products[edit]
Forest Laboratories developed and marketed a variety of pharmaceutical products. Some of the most notable drugs included:
- Lexapro (escitalopram) - An antidepressant used to treat major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.
- Namenda (memantine) - A medication used to treat moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease.
- Bystolic (nebivolol) - A beta blocker used to treat hypertension.
Research and Development[edit]
Forest Laboratories invested heavily in research and development to bring new drugs to market. The company collaborated with various research institutions and other pharmaceutical companies to develop innovative treatments. Its R&D efforts were primarily focused on the central nervous system, cardiovascular, and respiratory therapeutic areas.
Acquisition by Actavis[edit]
In 2014, Forest Laboratories was acquired by Actavis, which later became known as Allergan. This acquisition allowed Actavis to enhance its specialty brand business and expand its product offerings in the central nervous system and women's health areas.
