County Dublin (Irish: Contae Bhaile Átha Cliath ) is a historic county in Ireland. It is located on the east coast of the island, within the province of Leinster. The county is named after the city of Dublin, which is the capital of Ireland.

History[edit | edit source]

County Dublin was one of the first counties to be established by the Normans following their invasion of Ireland in the 12th century. The county was formally established in the late 12th century and has played a central role in Irish history ever since.

In 1994, County Dublin was divided into three administrative counties: Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, Fingal, and South Dublin, while the city of Dublin became a separate administrative area. Despite this division, the term "County Dublin" is still used to refer to the area as a whole.
