Crozes-Hermitage AOC is a French wine appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) in the northern part of the Rhône Valley wine region. It is the largest of the northern Rhône appellations and produces both red and white wines. The appellation is named after the commune of Crozes-Hermitage in the Drôme department.

History[edit | edit source]

The Crozes-Hermitage AOC was established in 1937. The region has a long history of viticulture dating back to Roman times. The wines from this area were historically overshadowed by those from the neighboring Hermitage AOC, but they have gained recognition in their own right over the past few decades.

Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]

The Crozes-Hermitage AOC is situated on the left bank of the Rhône River, surrounding the hill of Hermitage. The region benefits from a continental climate with Mediterranean influences, characterized by hot summers and mild winters. The Mistral wind, which blows from the north, helps to keep the vineyards dry and free from disease.

Soil[edit | edit source]

The soils in Crozes-Hermitage are diverse, ranging from granite and alluvial deposits in the northern part to clay and limestone in the southern part. This diversity contributes to the complexity and variety of the wines produced in the region.

Grape Varieties[edit | edit source]

The primary grape variety for red Crozes-Hermitage is Syrah, which must constitute at least 85% of the blend. The remaining 15% can include Marsanne and Roussanne. For white Crozes-Hermitage, the wines are made from Marsanne and Roussanne.

Wine Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Red Wines[edit | edit source]

Red Crozes-Hermitage wines are known for their deep color, robust structure, and flavors of dark fruits, spices, and sometimes earthy or smoky notes. They can be enjoyed young but also have the potential to age well.

White Wines[edit | edit source]

White Crozes-Hermitage wines are typically aromatic and full-bodied, with flavors of stone fruits, honey, and floral notes. They are often enjoyed young but can also develop complexity with age.

Viticulture and Winemaking[edit | edit source]

Viticulture in Crozes-Hermitage involves careful vineyard management to ensure the health and quality of the grapes. Winemaking techniques vary, with some producers opting for traditional methods and others employing modern technology. The use of oak barrels for aging is common, particularly for red wines.
