A cup of coffee refers to a beverage made from the coffee beans of coffee plants. The two most commonly grown types of coffee are Coffea arabica (Arabica) and Coffea canephora (Robusta), with Arabica being the more widely consumed. After planting, it takes three to four years for the coffee trees to bear fruit, often called "cherries." Once the cherries are ripe, they are harvested either by hand or mechanically.
Following harvest, the coffee beans are extracted from the cherries through either a dry method, where the cherries are laid out in the sun to dry, or a wet method, which involves removing the pulp from the cherry and fermenting the beans. The beans are then dried, roasted, and ground into coffee powder, which is used to brew coffee.

There are various methods for brewing a cup of coffee, each producing a different flavor profile and intensity. Some of the most popular methods include:
- Espresso, a concentrated coffee brewed by forcing a small amount of nearly boiling water through finely-ground coffee beans. - French press or plunger, where coarse coffee grounds are steeped in boiling water, and then separated by pressing down a metal or plastic plunger through a mesh sieve. - Drip brew or filter coffee, where hot water is poured over ground coffee, which is contained in a filter, allowing the brew to drip into a carafe or pot. - Pour over, a method where hot water is poured evenly over coffee grounds in a filter, allowing the coffee to drip into a vessel below.
