Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]

The Dão region is located in the central part of Portugal, surrounded by the Serra da Estrela, Serra do Caramulo, and Serra da Nave mountain ranges. These mountains provide a natural barrier that protects the vineyards from harsh weather conditions, creating a unique microclimate that is ideal for viticulture. Wine Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Dão wines are known for their elegance, complexity, and aging potential. Red wines from the region typically exhibit flavors of dark fruits, such as blackberry and plum, along with floral notes and a hint of spice. They are often well-structured with firm tannins and balanced acidity. White wines from the Dão DOC are usually fresh and aromatic, with flavors of citrus, green apple, and mineral notes.

Winemaking[edit | edit source]

Traditional winemaking techniques are commonly used in the Dão region, including foot treading in granite lagares and aging in large oak barrels. However, modern winemaking practices have also been adopted to enhance the quality and consistency of the wines. The combination of traditional and modern methods allows winemakers to produce wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Dão region.

The Dão DOC was officially established in 1908, making it one of the first demarcated wine regions in Portugal. Over the years, the region has gained a reputation for producing some of the finest wines in the country.
