The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is an American media franchise and shared universe centered on a series of superhero films and television series produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and based on characters that appear in American comic books by DC Comics. The shared universe, much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), was established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast, and characters.

History[edit | edit source]

The DCEU began with the release of Man of Steel in 2013, directed by Zack Snyder. This film was intended to be the start of a new shared universe, with Henry Cavill starring as Superman. The success of Man of Steel led to the development of further films, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Suicide Squad (2016), Wonder Woman (2017), and Justice League (2017).

Films[edit | edit source]

The DCEU includes the following films:

Television Series[edit | edit source]

The DCEU has also expanded into television with series such as:

Characters[edit | edit source]

The DCEU features a wide array of characters from the DC Comics universe, including:

Development[edit | edit source]

The development of the DCEU has been marked by a series of changes in direction and creative teams. Initially spearheaded by Zack Snyder, the franchise has seen contributions from directors such as Patty Jenkins, James Wan, and David Ayer. The DCEU has also been noted for its darker tone compared to the MCU, although recent films have aimed to incorporate more humor and lighter elements.

Future Projects[edit | edit source]

Several future projects are in development, including films centered on characters such as The Flash, Green Lantern Corps, and Batgirl. Additionally, sequels to existing films like Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Wonder Woman 3 are also in the works.
