DMBB

DMBB or Dimethylbutylbarbituric acid is a barbiturate derivative that has sedative and hypnotic properties. It is a rare example of a barbiturate drug that has an unsymmetrical structure, most barbiturates having two identical substituents on the 5-position of the barbituric acid ring.

History

DMBB was first synthesized in the 1970s as part of a series of barbiturates designed to investigate the influence of molecular structure on biological activity.

Pharmacology

Like other barbiturates, DMBB acts as a positive allosteric modulator of the GABA_A receptor, but is less potent than most other barbiturates and has only moderate efficacy. It has similar effects to other barbiturates such as sedation, hypnosis, anesthesia, and respiratory depression, but is less potent and has a slower onset of action.

Side Effects

The side effects of DMBB are similar to those of other barbiturates and can include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, and respiratory depression. Overdose can lead to coma or death.
