Daniel Amen

Daniel Amen is an American psychiatrist and brain disorder specialist who is both a New York Times best-selling author and the founder of Amen Clinics. He is a recognized expert in the field of neuroimaging within psychiatry and has developed a number of brain-based strategies for improving mental health.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Daniel Amen was born in Encino, California in 1954. He received his undergraduate degree in biology from Southern California College and earned his medical degree from the Oral Roberts University School of Medicine. He completed his general psychiatric residency at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and his child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Career[edit | edit source]

Amen is best known for his use of single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging to identify and treat brain disorders. He has used this technique in his clinics to diagnose and treat a variety of conditions, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, addictions, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Amen has written over 30 books, including several New York Times bestsellers. His books explore the connection between physical and mental health, and offer strategies for maintaining and improving brain health.

Criticism[edit | edit source]

While Amen's work has been popular among the general public, it has also been the subject of criticism within the medical community. Critics argue that the use of SPECT imaging for psychiatric diagnoses is not supported by the scientific literature, and that Amen's clinics may be offering expensive treatments that are not proven to be effective.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Amen is married to Tana Amen, a nurse and health and fitness expert. They have four children and live in Costa Mesa, California.
