Darrell Russell (May 27, 1976 – December 15, 2005) was an American professional American football player who was a defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL). He played primarily for the Oakland Raiders and briefly for the Washington Redskins. Russell's career was marked by outstanding early success, but it was also overshadowed by off-field issues and suspensions related to violations of the NFL's substance abuse policy.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Born in Pensacola, Florida, Russell moved to San Diego where he attended St. Augustine High School. He was a standout player in high school football, which led him to receive a scholarship to attend the University of Southern California (USC). At USC, Russell earned All-American honors and was recognized as one of the top college defensive players in the nation.
Professional career[edit | edit source]
Russell was selected by the Oakland Raiders with the second overall pick in the 1997 NFL Draft. He quickly made an impact in the NFL, earning two consecutive Pro Bowl selections in 1998 and 1999. Despite his success on the field, Russell's career was plagued by multiple suspensions due to violations of the NFL's substance abuse policy.
Later life and death[edit | edit source]
After brief stints with other NFL teams and attempts to revive his career, Russell's personal struggles continued. He died in a car accident in Los Angeles, California on December 15, 2005, at the age of 29.
