Dasyuridae
Dasyuridae is a family of marsupials found primarily in Australia and New Guinea. This family includes a variety of species, ranging from the small antechinus to the larger Tasmanian devil. Members of the Dasyuridae family are commonly referred to as dasyurids.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Dasyurids are characterized by their sharp teeth, which are adapted for a carnivorous diet. They have a well-developed sense of smell and are generally nocturnal. Most species have a pouch where the young are carried and nurtured after birth. The size of dasyurids can vary significantly, with some species weighing as little as 4 grams, while others, like the Tasmanian devil, can weigh up to 14 kilograms.
Habitat[edit | edit source]
Dasyurids inhabit a wide range of environments, from arid deserts to lush rainforests. They are adaptable and can be found in various ecological niches across their range. Their habitats include forests, woodlands, grasslands, and scrublands.
Diet[edit | edit source]
The diet of dasyurids primarily consists of insects, small mammals, birds, and reptiles. Some species are also known to scavenge. Their carnivorous nature is reflected in their dentition, which is specialized for tearing flesh.
Reproduction[edit | edit source]
Reproduction in dasyurids involves a short gestation period, followed by the birth of underdeveloped young. The young then continue to develop in the mother's pouch. The number of offspring can vary, with some species giving birth to as many as 12 young at a time.
Conservation Status[edit | edit source]
Many dasyurid species are facing threats due to habitat destruction, climate change, and introduced predators such as cats and foxes. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these unique marsupials, with some species being listed as endangered or vulnerable.

- Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii)
- Quokka (Setonix brachyurus)
- Numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus)
