David H. Patton (Indiana Congressman)

David Henry Patton (1828–1897) was an American physician, politician, and diplomat. He is best known for his service as a U.S. Representative from Indiana and his role as the U.S. Minister to Argentina.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

David Henry Patton was born on November 26, 1828, in Flemingsburg, Kentucky. He pursued an education in medicine and graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1851. After completing his medical degree, Patton began practicing medicine in Lebanon, Indiana.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

Patton's medical career was marked by his dedication to public health and his involvement in various medical organizations. He was a member of the American Medical Association and contributed to the advancement of medical practices in Indiana.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Patton's political career began with his election to the Indiana House of Representatives in 1869. He served in the state legislature until 1871. In 1876, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives, representing Indiana's 9th congressional district. He served one term from March 4, 1877, to March 3, 1879.

During his time in Congress, Patton focused on issues related to public health, veterans' affairs, and education. He was known for his advocacy for the establishment of a national public health service.

Diplomatic Service[edit | edit source]

After his term in Congress, Patton was appointed by President Grover Cleveland as the U.S. Minister to Argentina, serving from 1885 to 1889. In this role, he worked to strengthen diplomatic relations between the United States and Argentina, promoting trade and cooperation.

Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]

Following his diplomatic service, Patton returned to Indiana, where he continued to practice medicine and remained active in public affairs. He passed away on January 17, 1897, in Remington, Indiana, and was buried in the local cemetery.
