David Malcolm Nott (born 1 January 1956) is a British surgeon who is renowned for his work in war zones and areas affected by natural disasters. Over the years, he has volunteered his surgical skills in conflict zones such as Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Sierra Leone, among others. Nott is also a consultant surgeon at several hospitals in London, including St Mary's Hospital, Charing Cross Hospital, and the Royal Marsden Hospital.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

David Nott was born in Carmarthen, Wales, to a Welsh mother and an Indian father. His father was a consultant orthopedic surgeon, which influenced Nott's decision to pursue a career in medicine. He studied medicine at the University of Manchester, where he graduated with a degree in medicine and surgery.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

Nott's medical career began in the United Kingdom, where he specialized in general surgery and vascular surgery. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1989. His expertise in trauma surgery and vascular surgery has been instrumental in his work in war zones.

Humanitarian Work[edit | edit source]

David Nott's humanitarian work is extensive and has taken him to some of the most dangerous places in the world. He has worked with various organizations, including Médecins Sans Frontières and the International Committee of the Red Cross. His work often involves performing complex surgeries in makeshift hospitals with limited resources.

In 2015, Nott established the David Nott Foundation, which aims to provide training for doctors in conflict and disaster zones. The foundation offers courses in surgical techniques that are essential in such challenging environments.

Nott has received numerous awards for his humanitarian efforts, including the Pride of Britain Award and the Robert Burns Humanitarian Award. In 2016, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to medicine and humanitarian aid.
