David "Davie" Cooper (25 February 1956 – 23 March 1995) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a winger. He is regarded as one of the most talented players in the history of Scottish football.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Cooper was born in Hamilton, Scotland. He began his football career with local youth team Clydebank Strollers before signing professionally with Clydebank in 1974.

Club career[edit | edit source]

Clydebank[edit | edit source]

Cooper made his professional debut for Clydebank in 1974. During his time at the club, he made 95 appearances and scored 23 goals, quickly establishing himself as a promising young talent.

Rangers[edit | edit source]

In 1977, Cooper signed for Rangers, where he would spend the majority of his career. Over 12 years, he made 377 league appearances and scored 49 goals. Cooper was known for his exceptional dribbling skills, precise crossing, and ability to score from free-kicks. He won numerous domestic titles with Rangers, including the Scottish Premier Division, Scottish Cup, and Scottish League Cup.

Motherwell[edit | edit source]

In 1989, Cooper transferred to Motherwell, where he continued to display his footballing prowess. He made 119 league appearances and scored 8 goals for the club. Cooper was instrumental in Motherwell's victory in the 1991 Scottish Cup Final.

Return to Clydebank[edit | edit source]

Cooper returned to Clydebank in 1993, where he played until his retirement in 1994. He made 19 appearances and scored 1 goal in his final season.

International career[edit | edit source]

Cooper earned 22 caps for the Scotland national team between 1979 and 1990, scoring 6 goals. He also represented the Scotland U21 team, earning 5 caps.

Death[edit | edit source]

Davie Cooper passed away on 23 March 1995 at the age of 39 after suffering a brain hemorrhage during a filming session for a coaching video.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Cooper is remembered as one of Scotland's greatest footballers. His skill and flair on the pitch left a lasting impression on fans and fellow players alike. In 1999, he was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame.
