Dental Technician
A Dental Technician is a member of the dental team who, upon prescription from a dental clinician, constructs custom made restorative and dental appliances.
Role and Responsibilities[edit | edit source]
The Dental Technician has been traditionally referred to as the member of the dental team who works in a laboratory, separate from the dental office, receiving prescriptions and instructions from the dentist and constructing dental prosthetics (crowns, bridges, dentures) to the dentist's specifications. However, this role has been expanded in recent years to include the provision of clinical dental technology services directly to the public.
Education and Training[edit | edit source]
Training to become a Dental Technician can be achieved through a two-year Associate degree program or a four-year Bachelor of Science degree. Both degrees are typically offered by dental schools or by universities.
Regulation[edit | edit source]
In many countries, Dental Technicians are regulated by a professional body, such as the General Dental Council in the UK, or the Dental Board of Australia in Australia. These bodies set standards for education, training, and professional conduct, and have the power to remove a Dental Technician from practice if these standards are not met.
