Flupentixol

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

(Redirected from Depixol)

Flupentixol (also known as Fluanxol) is a typical antipsychotic drug from the thioxanthene class. It is primarily used in the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Flupentixol is a potent antagonist of both dopamine D1 and D2 receptors, inhibiting the effects of dopamine in the brain. It also has some affinity for the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor, which may contribute to its antipsychotic effects.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

Flupentixol is used in the treatment of acute and chronic schizophrenia, other psychotic disorders, and as an adjunct in the treatment of severe depression. It is available in oral and injectable forms. The injectable form, flupentixol decanoate, is a long-acting preparation used for maintenance therapy.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of flupentixol include extrapyramidal symptoms such as tremor, rigidity, and akathisia, dystonia, and tardive dyskinesia. Other side effects can include dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and weight gain.

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

Flupentixol is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components. It should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, liver disease, and in elderly patients.
