Desmethoxyyangonin

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Desmethoxyyangonin is one of the six major kavalactones found in the kava plant. It has been shown to possess a variety of pharmacological activities, including potential activity against cancer cells.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Desmethoxyyangonin is a reversible inhibitor of Monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B), an enzyme that breaks down dopamine in the brain. This may contribute to the psychoactive effects of kava. In addition, desmethoxyyangonin has been shown to increase the release of dopamine in the brain.

Potential Therapeutic Uses[edit | edit source]

Desmethoxyyangonin has been studied for its potential therapeutic uses. It has been shown to have potential activity against cancer cells, particularly leukemia and colon cancer cells. However, more research is needed to confirm these findings and determine the safety and efficacy of desmethoxyyangonin as a therapeutic agent.

Safety[edit | edit source]

The safety of desmethoxyyangonin, like other kavalactones, is not fully understood. Some studies have suggested that kava and its constituents may have potential liver toxicity. However, other studies have found no evidence of liver toxicity. More research is needed to determine the safety of desmethoxyyangonin.
